Salmagundi - a collection of Oldnauti Bits & Pieces
We sometimes have stock for sale that doesn't relate to any of our existing catalogues - we introduced this page to list those items.
Why Salmagundi?
We already have pages for Nautical Miscellaneous and Aeronautical Miscellaneous, so we looked for a suitable synonym to describe a collection of bits & pieces
Salmagundi has two definitions - although the first sounds tasty, we think the second applies to this collection of stock!
- A salad of chopped meat, anchovies, eggs, and onions, often arranged in rows on lettuce and served with vinegar and oil.
- A mixture or assortment - a potpourri.

| 2494 | | | Autograph & Sketch Book dated Christmas 1913 - A super leather covered book dedicated to Sophie from Mary G. Googh and dated Xmas 1913. It has numerous entries dated from 1916 to 1928 and included poems, cartoons and painted pictures. One features a square rigger entering Falmouth Bay in 1914 and captioned "Safe in Port". Another is a poignant poem by Private M. J. Wors of the Royal Fusiliers dated June 28th, 1915 and one wonders if he survived the war to end all wars. A further cartoon shows a cat and mouse with the caption "How long have you been rationed?" Perhaps the most moving image is entitled "My little dug out on the Somme" and is signed by L. Badger 1.1.17. This emotive book was purchased in Cornwall, S.W. England and with names like Pascoe and Goldworthy, it would appear to relate to a Cornish family living in the Falmouth area. Some fading and minor wear to spine but generally in excellent condition for its age and certainly a unique one off item. | £65.00 | | 4192 | | | British Graham Land Expedition 1934 - 1937 Full Field Goggles - These come complete with original fitted case indicating manufactured by Theodore Hamblin Ltd. of Wigmore Street, London. The BGLE was organised so as to map the west coast of Graham Land to explore alternative passages through the Stefenson Strait rather than through the eastern approach that proved so disastrous to Shackleton. The goggles are fitted with salvog yellow lenses which were used on the Everest expeditions and gave maximum protection to ultra violet light. Some fogging to lenses and associated age wear but a possible unique and historical set of expedition goggles. | £75.00 | | PC168 | | | Swastika Motif Hat Pin - We believe this fine example probably dates from the 1020's when the swastika device was considered a symbol of well being and predates its adoption as a symbol of the Nazi Party in the 1930's. This hat pin has an arts & crafts feel to it and features inset clear and emerald coloured stones. It carries no makers marks and we'll leave it to the experts to decide on its age and origins. Pin measures 9" (23cm) | £35.00 | | 4632 | | | Liberation of Belgium Scarf dated September 1944 - A beautifully executed, hand painted example featuring the national flags of the USSR, USA, Belgium, Britain and Free French. Below is a dated shield and an inscription "souvenir de Belgique de Mrs Vierse a Mrs Owen". It would appear that the scarf may have been commisioned by her husband who was probably a member of the liberating forces. Judging by the original packaging, it could well have been presented at a Christmas present in December 1944. A fine souvenir of Summer 65 years ago. | £25.00 | | 4446 | | | WWII Remembrance Paper Weight - Features an attractive coloured picture with a cross, red poppy, banner and with a caption below "1939 - Lest We Forget - 1945". In the background is a windmill which gives a Dutch feel to the image. This is mounted on a heavy slate base and whilst this has a few minor chips to the edge, it remains it remains a decorative and useful item. Measures 5" x 4.5" (13cm x 11cm) | £25.00 | | 3213 | | | Presentation Gravel named to Woolwich Arsenal - A fine polished hardwood example with an engraved plaque reading "Woolwich Arsenal 1914-1918 R.S.F. No. I.C.P. Presented to G.A.Sheppard." Unfortunately, we have no history with this item, but if any visitors to the site can enlighten us, we would be glad to hear from them! Length from head to tip of handle 8.5" (22cm) | £54.00 | | 1621 | | | Trench Art Shell Case Ashtrays - A matched pair, each inset with Italian 2 lire coins, one showing the head of King Vittorio Emanuele III, while the other shows the reverse side of an identical coin featuring the fascist eagle and dated 1940. The shell case ends carry no identifiable markings and are finished in chrome. They are extremely heavy, so please check postage with us before ordering. Diameter 6" (15.5cm) | | | 2178 | | | Trench Art Tankard celebrating the North African Campaign - A wonderful example depicting the North African coastline from Morocco through Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, with cartoons showing soldiers, tanks and palm trees as well as a brief description of events and dates. These commence on the 8th November, 1942 with American landings in Morocco and conclude on 13th May, 1945. The tankard has been manufactured from brass salvaged from the actual battle fields in North Africa and makes a wonderful momento of that critical campaign in WWII. Height 4.75" (12.5cm) | | | 2124 | | | Field Ambulance Presentation Cigarette Box - Manufactured from sterling silver and engraved to lid 6(U)FD AMB 1942. Below this there are a number of engraved signatures. We believe this item has been presented by members of the 6th Field Ambulance Unit, probably by colleagues of a departing member. The silver plate shows some wear, but overall in excellent original condition with wood lining. 13cm x 8cm x 4.5cm | |
