Item 7104 Royal Navy electric gimble lamp
A fine example of the Admiralty Pattern AP9009 gimble lamp for either table or bulkhead mounting and we have photographed in both positions to illustrate these applications. This pattern was certainly in use during WWII (see final period photograph attached) and probably also in the early post war period. What makes this example standout from the crowd is it is finished in polished steel as opposed to the normal cast brass. In over 20 years of trading this is the first time we have purchased an example to this specification so we would consider considerably scarcer than the brass variant and likewise is significantly easier to keep clean. It is maker marked 'Harcourts', a Birmingham foundry established in 1820, as opposed to the more common 'Playmit' made lamps. Our research indicates Harcourts set up a lamp department back in 1928.
The lamp base carries the makers name and on the opposite side the Royal Navy stores number AP9009 which specifies this lamp design. The base is heavily weighted and is fitted with a bulkhead mount to aid a wall fitting. The original BC switched lamp holder is finished in brass and is marked 'Crabtree' and 'Made in England'. The lamp has been recently rewired using period style braided cord and is fitted with a fused 13-amp plug. The lamp stands 11.75" tall (30 cm) to the top of the lamp holder and weighs an impressive 2.3 kilos. Please note this listing is for the lamp alone and the coolie shade and bulb are for display purposes only. Whilst this listing is for a single lamp, we were fortunate to buy a near matched pair. If you should require two lamps please drop us an e mail and we would be happy to supply both less 10% discount.
